Therapy dog Casper, A letter from David
Bob Taylor,
I wanted to provide you a written report on Casper the Akita you trained for me earlier this year.
We have been called on three times in a two week period the prior two the hunters came out prior to any of the Search team reaching the area. In this case the lost hunters Cousin realized that it was getting dark and very cold and his Cousin was lost.
The Fleecer area is a very tough terrain. When we arrived I selected tow of my team mates and the lost person's cousin to attempt to locate the missing person. We hiked in a little over 4 miles to the place they knew the person had left from. Casper was scented to the track and given the command to search. It was very easy to see when Casper was near the lost person.
One of the team along with the Cousin who was younger and able to move quicker on ahead. The track was 18 hours old, and covered with 4 feet of snow, and it was 25 below zero at two in the morning.
We tracked it 8 miles to where he was sitting near a tree and feeling "he was gong to die". He at first thought he was "loosing it when he could hear Bill and his Cousin calling to him. He did respond. There were many times when Casper was at cross tracks which set to follow. In each situation he followed the correct path.
Casper is also a Certified Therapy dog which he was very happy to do his therapy tasks when he came to the still very cold hunter. The hunter began to laugh and talk to Casper in a few minutes with a fire going he was back in Mental and Physical status to make the 2 mile hike out.
This was a very difficult track to follow and I am very pleased with how Casper worked this task.
Casper most every weekend goes out on practice tracks and Cadaver practice. Since his return for Bob's school he has been on track and task each and every time I have ask him to. The search team has been given a second dog. This dog is on its way to Bob's School where after it is trained will supplement Casper and also fill in the areas which Casper by breed is not as strong.
Casper has proven many times that he is able to work with any handler who knows how to work a dog. This is a philosophy which Bob brings to life in each of his trained dogs. This is a very atypical thought process and should be noted as something which no other trainer I am aware of is able to do.
Casper is a certified Therapy dog and is a working dog at the Medical center I work at. The kids and many patients who he contacts are always very eager to have him come visit. Bob has been able to take Casper form a normal Akita to a very recognized Akita. The largest portion of his success is due to Bob and the staff of his school. Please feel free to call me directly if you wish to ask any questions.
Sincerely,
