DOGWISH IS WINNING THE FIGHT AT SCHOOL!
Do Children with Autism need K9s? Do they need them at school? We are viewing an approaching change of incredible potential with School Districts across the Nation. Most of these districts are presently in opposition, and fighting to stop Children with Autism from brining their trained Service Assistance K9s to school. There are good reasons.
- Many of these children are not capable of handling these K9s in a responsible manner.
- Very few of these "K9s" are trained appropriately to use the title of Service Assistance, and are not really K9s, but "misnamed" therapy dogs, sold to eager families as Service K9s, when they do not meet the requirements to be K9s.
- The Schools producing these dogs have not trained them to be of a quality that is acceptable for use in the Schools they need to work in.
- The Schools are not ready to use these dogs properly, and do not know what to do with them.
It is amazing that the only places where my recipients with Autism have trouble taking their dogs are clinics working with Autistic Children, and Schools where the go for education. It is like the people at those clinics and schools are afraid of being replaced by a dog. They don't like facing the fact that their years of charging for services that have in many ways been unsuccessful are being corrected by a trained dog, even though they are.
For this reason I have written the following letter, used in discussion with the Board of Education, Counselors, and Attorneys for Bakersfield City Elementary School District, that explained how our K9s are trained, and why they are capable of being used in School, and necessary to be brought to School.
