Rebekah Van Diest
I am Rebekah Van Diest. I am a 23 year old, and have been diagnosed with a "functional" form of Autism. I am legally blind, and has several other neurological problems. Some of the difficulties that I face daily are communicating with others, large crowds, anxiety and depression, panic attacks, and my own self image. In times of emotional distress I have made some big mistakes and tried to seriously hurt myself, or run away, because I feel so lonely and disturbed. I stress and tend to go into sensory overload. This consists of either Self stemming, outbursts or the loss of emotional control. Because of these difficulties I tend to shy way from going out in public. I prefer to stay home and avoid the stress of too much public contact because people don't understand and often hurt me. I have needed a friend who will understand me, and help me cope with the stresses of life, making me feel loved and special, and give me a reason to keep trying.
Through the internet I have found an organization that is dedicated to providing service dogs to people with autism, The DOGWISH Foundation. Their K9 Chief is specifically trained to connect with me through a special bond related to my scent. This K9 has become my friend, confidant, protector, stress reliever & alert system. This dog helps interrupt my meltdowns or explosive behavior with his presence or a gentle nudge. He is able to provide me with calming deep pressure during sensory overload or stressful new situations. My anxiety being exposed to social situations is curbed by the constant presence of this "best friend," one who doesn't judge me or expect me to be perfect. He provides the service of confidant and sleeping companion, in a world that seems assaults my senses and sensibilities. Chief has helped me cope with my disabilities, mentally, socially, and personally, and in more ways than I can even explain.
I need help to pay The DOGWISH Foundation for placing Chief with me. I will probably never to able to pay them in full, but they have done so much for me. Please consider helping me out. YOUR generous donation to The DOGWISH Foundation will help them to continue to provide K9s for others who need help too. Support us, and share this letter with anyone that would please consider making a tax-deductible donation in my name or you may contact me. I am trying to raise a $10,000.00 in exchange for Chief, to help them train a K9 for somebody else.
