Payton Huggins

Payton is Autistic. He is 5 years old and was diagnosed last year as PDD-NOS by a pediatric neurologist. He really didn't start talking until recently. He didn't say Mommy until age 3. Now he has a few sentences when requesting food or an activity he wants like using the computer. It is hard to know exactly what he does or doesn't understand. He has Receptive Language Disorder, which means he does not necessarily comprehend what is being said, and it is difficult for him to express himself verbally and unfortunately does not have the "red flag" mechanism in his brain that tells him something may be dangerous. Frequently he runs off. He wants to have and keep friends, but his behavior sometimes scares other children off. Payton's frustration comes out in emotional meltdowns. He can become physically aggressive, and is difficult to calm down. He also has meltdowns when he becomes overloaded, whether it be from sensory overload (too loud singing, or too bright lights), not being able to finish a "ritual" or if the overload is coming from too many demands. Max does love animals; in particular, our friend's two Labrador Retrievers.

Through extensive research I have found an organization that is dedicated to providing service dogs to young people with autism, The DOGWISH Foundation. Their dog will be specifically trained to connect with Payton through a special bond related to his scent. This dog will be his friend, confidant, protector, stress reliever & alert system. We are hopeful that the dog will help interrupt his meltdowns or explosive behavior with his presence or a gentle nudge. He will be able to provide him calming deep pressure during sensory overload or stressful new situations. His anxiety being exposed to social situations will be curbed with the constant presence of his "best friend," one who doesn't judge him or expect him to be perfect. He will provide the service of confidant and sleeping companion, in a world that seems assaults his senses and sensibilities, while he is awake and asleep. A service dog will help in his autistic recovery, mentally, socially, educationally, and in more ways than we can probably even imagine.

I am very excited about what this opportunity can to bring Payton to more fully to become the man I have hoped for him to be. He has been such a gift to me and like every parent I just want him to be healthy and happy. If you have been so blessed, please consider playing an integral part in Payton's FULL development.

YOUR generous donation to The DOGWISH Foundation will help us pay for Payton's Service Assistance K9. Support him and share this letter with anyone that would please consider making a tax-deductible donation. I need to raise a $10,000.00 to pay for his K9. I also welcome prayers toward this effort or easy fundraising ideas.
