Jonah and Gabriel Kimmel
Alex and Melissa Kimmel have two wonderful sons, Jonah and Gabriel. Unfortunately, their sons were also born with Autism. "Our son Jonah is autistic, with no sense of danger, and has a strong tendency to dart off into the street and other harmful situations. He is considered non-verbal. He also has a tendency to go off by himself and avoid social interaction. Although he is making strides in these areas, any assistance that a K9 could give him would be incredible." Gabriel has also been diagnosed with Autism and is suffering with similar problems caused by this development disability.
We met Alex and his family at an Autism related event in late April, and they came out to our DOGWISH K9 Academy where they met "Charlie" a young, male, black Labrador retriever. Charlie is in training to become a Service Assistance K9 for the Autistic. He will be trained as a Guide typed K9, a Search K9, a Seizure Alert K9, and a Psychiatric Assistance K9. These dogs really help their recipients develop personally, within the family, socially, emotionally, educationally, and in many other ways. Learning to accept discipline, respond motivationally, Develop better personal and social esteem are greatly enhanced through a trained K9. Charlie, Gabrielle, and Jonah decided to become friends, and spent a couple of hours playing and being together. After the Kimmel's left, Charlie had a strong emotional reaction to their being gone. We took another 5 days and completed Charlie's K9 Evaluations. Charlie passed with flying colors. We were able to call and tell Alex that all lights were green!
The meeting at our facility not only had a dramatic affect on the boys, it affected Charlie as well. Since that meeting Charlie has become a different dog. He has become more intelligent, more sensitive, more responsive, and more capable. This often happens when a dog meets the person they connect and bond with. It is something we observe and evaluate very carefully. Pairing a K9 and their recipient together is vitally and strategically important. The closer the K9 can bond with their recipients, the more impressive their performance will be.
The Kimmel's now have a big job to do. They need to raise $10,000.00 dollars to pay for Charlie and his training. It is NOT an easy job and they need your help. Your donations will make all the difference for Jonah and Charlie.
