I would like to introduce you to Devin Nicol. Devin is a 19 year old young man who wants to progress into adult life like everyone else. However, Devin struggles with Down Syndrome, and doesn't read, spell, or communicate very well. He spends most of his time in solitude by himself, or with one or two members of his family. He wants to be independent and feel like he can care for himself. Unlike what you might think, Devin is in many ways very smart, especially in his ability to communicate, train with, and handle the family dogs. He loves animals, and relates with them on a level that is unusual. They listen to him and do things for him they won't do for anyone else. At the same time, the two shepherds he has grown up with are old, and won't be around long. Devin needs a new dog, a special dog, one that will:

Enable him to be more independent and yet be safe at the same time,
Help boost his confidence about being around more people,
Help him learn to enhance his ability to communicate and express himself,
Help him enjoy being around the family more,
Enable the family to leave him at home, etc., by himself more confidently.

Through the internet we have found an organization that is dedicated to providing service dogs to people with Down Syndrome, The DOGWISH Foundation.

Their K9s are specifically and dynamically trained to connect with the handler through a special bond using electromagnetic energy and scent discrimination. This K9 will become Devin's friend, confidant, protector, stress reliever & alert system. DOGWISH K9s are trained to help balance mental/emotional behaviors, and are "brainwave and body functioning sensitive, as documented by several top psychologists and neurological experts, nationwide. Devin feels safe wherever he is but we as parents want to know that he will be safe and will find his way home. He is so isolated in his world now.
