Colton Pense
THE PAST: Imagine giving birth to a perfectly healthy child... every parents' dream come true. Perfect hearing, perfect vision, perfect little fingers and toes. Then at the age of 14 months things are not as you expected. This child won't acknowledge your existence, won't respond to your voice. Only seeks you out when you can be used as a tool to help him accomplish his needs. This child is violent, aggressive and often self destructive. Yet there are times when you see a smile that would melt an iceberg, hear a laugh that would brighten an eclipse and feel the touch of a little hand pulling you to join him in his play... you can only hope that this moment is him opening the doorway into his world, just a little bit and he's inviting you in... but just as quickly the door shuts and reality hits you when your son is diagnosed at 26 months old as AUTISTIC.
THE PRESENT: Colton is now 10 years old and he lives with this reality everyday. Colton is a considered "high-functioning". Although this is a positive when it comes to Colton's ability to complete basic daily tasks, it only makes it harder for Colton's social interaction. People expect him to be "normal". Colton has not been able to successfully establish friendships. Kids at school call him stupid, tell him to go away and call him weird. Colton lashes out in return, screaming, yelling and crying. His reactions often become physically violent toward others and even toward himself. On several occasions, Colton has walked out of class and attempted to leave school grounds. Fortunately, a staff member has happened to stop him before he gets too far. Colton usually retreats into a world of video games or internet gaming where his reality can become anything he chooses and he can interact online with people who don't "see" his disability and he can be treated like a "normal" kid.
THE FUTURE: The DogWish Foundation brought Brutus into Colton's life. To Brutus there is no such thing as autism. No one is normal or weird. No one is smart or stupid. There is only Colton... the little kid with the big heart that is full of love and the desire to give that love to someone. Brutus is an "Autism Assistance K-9 in Training" and will be trained in various skills necessary to serve and protect special needs children. Brutus will be trained in "seizure awareness" and will be able to detect the emotional energies created by an oncoming meltdown. Brutus can then provide a calming touch or distraction. Brutus will be trained in Search & Rescue and able to prevent Colton from wandering or will be able to find Colton if he wanders away. Brutus will be trained in Handler Protection, if someone is aggressive toward Colton, Brutus will be able to react and protect Colton.
COLTON NEEDS YOUR HELP: It takes a team of professionals to produce an animal with the level of skills and abilities that are necessary to become and Autism Assistance K-9. A fully trained service K-9 would typically cost around $20,000. DogWish Foundation has donated $10,000 on Colton's behalf. Now we must raise $10,000 to cover the costs of the extensive training that Brutus, Colton and the rest of the family must undergo over the next 18 months. Then Brutus will provide Colton with the security and confidence to experience freedoms that until now were not possible for him.
Your tax deductible donation to THE DOGWISH FOUNDATION will help us cover the costs of Colton's Assistance K-9. Please support Colton and share this letter with anyone that would consider making a donation in Colton's name. Your generosity and support (whether financial or simply in prayers) is greatly appreciated.
